What to expect from Pilates withNIKKi

Pilates for the 21st Century Lifestyle

Pilates was invented in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. He developed the method during World War I while interned in England, using it to help rehabilitate injured soldiers. After the war, he refined his approach and later moved to New York City in 1926, where he opened a studio and introduced Pilates to elite athletes, including boxers, circus performers, and martial artists!.

The method was originally called Contrology, emphasising controlled movements, core strength, breathwork, and body alignment. Over time, it became known as Pilates and evolved into the widely practiced system of movement and rehabilitation used today.

There are six Pilates Principles which should be evident in every Pilates class:

  • Control – Every movement should be performed with precision and control, avoiding sloppy or uncontrolled motions.

  • Concentration – Full mental focus is required to engage the correct muscles and perform exercises effectively.

  • Centering – The "powerhouse" (core) is the center of control for all movements, providing stability and strength.

  • Precision – Exercises should be executed with attention to detail, ensuring proper form and alignment.

  • Breath – Coordinated breathing enhances movement efficiency, supports muscle engagement, and promotes relaxation.

  • Flow – Movements should be smooth, continuous, and connected, avoiding jerky or isolated motions.

Nikki's Additional Principles

  • Balance – Stability and symmetry are essential for efficient movement. Balance between strength and mobility, left and right sides, and muscle engagement ensures proper joint alignment and reduces injury risk.

  • Awareness – Modern habits, such as prolonged sitting and screen use, create postural imbalances. Developing body awareness helps recognise and correct poor movement patterns, enhancing efficiency and preventing dysfunction.

  • Adaptability – Movement should support real-life function, not just studio exercises. Pilates should adapt to different body types, injuries, and daily demands, ensuring practical, sustainable benefits in everyday life.

Functionality For Life: For Everybody

Pilates isn't just for Athletes, Dancers or Boxers anymore. It is now a staple part of any Health Club Timetable.

Pilates is one of the most commonly recommended forms of exercise for injury rehabilitation by GPs, physiotherapists, and consultants in the UK. It is widely used in rehabilitation programs because it:

  • Improves core stability – Essential for back pain and postural issues.

  • Enhances movement control – Helps retrain movement patterns post-injury.

  • Strengthens without impact – Ideal for joint conditions and post-surgery rehab.

  • Focuses on flexibility & mobility – Supports recovery from stiffness and imbalance.

  • Encourages mind-body connection – Aids proprioception and neuromuscular control.

What's so different about Pilates withNIKKi

Pilates is one of the most commonly recommended forms of exercise for injury rehabilitation by GPs, physiotherapists, and consultants in the UK. It is widely used in rehabilitation programs because it improves core stability—essential for back pain and postural issues—enhances movement control, strengthens without impact, focuses on flexibility and mobility, and encourages mind-body connection for better proprioception and neuromuscular control. However, modern lifestyles present new challenges that require an evolved approach to movement.

This is where Pilates with NIKKi stands out, integrating the additional principles of Balance, Awareness, and Adaptability to meet the demands of 21st-century movement.

Balance is key to stability and injury prevention, ensuring symmetry between strength and mobility, left and right sides, and efficient posture.

Awareness helps counteract the effects of sedentary habits, prolonged screen use, and poor movement patterns by encouraging active recognition and correction of postural imbalances.

Adaptability ensures that Pilates with NIKKi is not just a studio-based practice but a functional movement system that supports real-life demands, from injury recovery to long-term resilience.

By incorporating these additional principles, Pilates with NIKKi provides a modern, results-driven approach to rehabilitation, ensuring that clients build strength, restore movement, and prevent future injury in a way that fits seamlessly into their lives.
